Susan Jakabcic Hambley, class of 1973, currently serves on Brunswick City Council as an at-large representative. Hambley has never let Muscular Dystrophy define her as a person or prevent her from pursuing her goals or sharing her talents with the world. In high school, she took part in band, choir and the high school production of “Fiddler on the Roof.”

At Baldwin-Wallace College, she overcame obstacles to complete her student teaching. She earned her bachelor of music education degree with a major in vocal music education and minor in piano. She works at B-W in the library of the Conservatory of Music as technical services librarian in an old building that was never meant to be handicapped accessible.

She is a member of Brunswick Art Works where she serves as president, Medina County Human Rights Committee for the Society for Handicapped Citizens, Brunswick Area Chamber of Commerce, Ohio Municipal League, Music Library Association, Friends of Medina County Parks, Medina County Farm Bureau, Brunswick Area and Ohio Historical societies.

She has many awards including Personal Achievement Awards for the State of Ohio and the region in 2005 by the Muscular Dystrophy Association; the Woman of Distinction Award for community volunteerism by the Western Reserve Girl Scout Council and Women of Distinction from the YWCA of Medina County.

She and husband, Steve, (BHS 1972 and a 2006 inductee in the Alumni Hall of Fame) have been married 30 years.
