Stephen Hambley, Ph.D. is a 1972 graduate of Brunswick High School and
has served as Medina County Commissioner since 1996.
He earned his bachelor's degree from Kent State University and his
master of arts and doctoral degrees from the University of Akron. His
fields of graduate study were urban studies, history of transportation,
political science and statistical research methods. He is a 1995
graduate of Leadership Medina County and has served on its board of
trustees.
Hambley's nominator has observed him for many years. "I am most
impressed with his knowledge of, and ability to implement, governmental
actions which improve the lives of the residents of our area," he said.
"Let me cite just one of those actions: Steve has been and is the key
leader in the development of the 211 First Call for Help system that now
functions in Medina County. He was able to bring government and
community services together for an efficient service to the residents."
Hambley has a rich background of community service including Brunswick
city councilman, United Way of Medina County board of trustees, Medina
County Housing Network, Rocky River Watershed Council chairman, NOACA
(currently serving as president of the governing board), Northeast Ohio
Voices & Choices Medina County Leadership Development co-chair and
volunteer staff member at regional town meetings.
His most recent award was the Michael Berken Peace & Justice Award
presented by the Catholic Commission of Wayne, Ashland & Medina, Diocese
of Cleveland, in 2005.
He is a frequent presenter of programs on government and history and
has many publications. He is creator and producer of the Medina County
History Project, video and supplemental educational materials depicting
the history of Medina County being used in fourth, seventh and 10th
grades throughout the county and provided to all school districts at no
cost.
He has lived in Medina County his whole life and is married to his high
school sweetheart, the former Susan Jakabcic. "Those who know this
family have nothing but admiration for the manner in which they have
made a life for themselves," one nominator said.
