Michael E. Carlson, Ed.D., class of 1966 was a gifted athlete at Brunswick High, especially in basketball, where he held many of the school’s records. He was offered scholarships from several Division I schools, but instead chose to stay close to home at Hiram College to be of help with the family business. He graduated from Hiram with honors.

Again, he was offered scholarships for his master’s degree work to such prestigious schools as Harvard, but chose Ohio University. Carlson earned his doctoral degree from The University of Akron. Carlson was a highly respected teacher, reaching out to at-risk students and making a difference in their lives. For many years, he was an administrator in the Highland Local Schools, serving as Superintendent until his retirement from education several years ago.

He is a former member and president of the Brunswick Board of Education and the Medina County Career Center among many activities.

He has been the recipient of many awards including the Superintendent Exemplary Leadership Award from the Buckeye Association of School Administrators, where he is a life member.

He has been CEO of Carlson Funeral Homes since 1987.

He and wife Karen (Chapman, BHS 1967) have two grown children, Kelly and Bradley.
